{"id":51,"date":"2013-08-09T20:27:32","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T20:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/yortyj\/?page_id=51"},"modified":"2013-08-15T15:08:51","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T15:08:51","slug":"teaching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/lancasterj\/teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>INTRODUCTION:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have a broad teaching portfolio in the Department of Biology.\u00a0 Since starting my tenure-track position in 2007 I have been responsible for teaching 6 different lecture courses and 6 different laboratories, including General Biology lecture and laboratory, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Nutrition. \u00a0Additionally, I serve as a faculty mentor for 2-4 research students per semester.\u00a0 I thoroughly enjoy teaching at Elizabethtown College where I am able to really get to know students on a more personal level.\u00a0 I particularly enjoy working with the first-year students as they transition to college.\u00a0 I often provide advice to young students about study skills, time management and college-level academic expectations.\u00a0 Students often comment that I am approachable and enthusiastic, and they appreciate my guidance.<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/yortyj\/files\/2013\/08\/Jodi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81 alignleft\" alt=\"Jodi\" src=\"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/yortyj\/files\/2013\/08\/Jodi-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/lancasterj\/files\/2013\/08\/Jodi-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/lancasterj\/files\/2013\/08\/Jodi.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>My teaching methods rely less on standard lecture and more on classroom discussion and group work.\u00a0 For example, I utilize debates and group presentations in the molecular biology course.\u00a0 The utility of molecular biology is often the basis for controversy in the popular news.\u00a0 Recent newsworthy topics include genetically modified foods, <i>in vitro<\/i> fertilization, genetic testing and the ability to have your own DNA sequenced.\u00a0 In the Immunology course students learn about the immune system through case-based learning.\u00a0 Students are provided a medically accurate case history and learn about the involvement of the immune system in Celiac Disease and mononucleosis.\u00a0 In Nutrition, students read <i>The Omnivore\u2019s Dilemma<\/i>, and discuss the social, political and environmental aspects of the food industry.\u00a0 These types of activities lead to a dynamic classroom in which students more readily learn course material.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_86\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/yortyj\/files\/2013\/08\/Turtle2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-86\" alt=\"Turtle2\" src=\"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/yortyj\/files\/2013\/08\/Turtle2-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-86\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BIO112 laboratory class measuring turtles in a pond at Elizabethtown College.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>LIST OF COURSES TAUGHT AT ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>BIO111 &#8211;
