{"id":5,"date":"2013-08-09T20:23:37","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T20:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/wohld\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2024-12-13T16:41:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T16:41:17","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/wohld\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Current Research.&nbsp;<\/strong> My interests are related to microorganisms and their interactions with each other and the surrounding environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;In my lab currently, we are researching:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/wohld\/files\/2013\/08\/four_bacteria1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>How best to preserve the gut microbiome<\/strong>.&nbsp; Specifically we are studying fecal matter and its preservation for use in fecal matter transplants (FMTs). Ultimately, we&#8217;d like to advance personalized medicine by being able to restore a healthy microbiome in individuals whose microbiome has been disrupted by illness or medical treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Check out this great video on FMTs!<\/strong>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biointeractive.org\/classroom-resources\/fecal-microbiota-transplants\">video<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Projects we have pursued in my lab include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Studying how microorganisms found in the oral cavity (mouth &amp; teeth) differ between Old Order Amish individuals compared to western non-Amish individuals, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Studying how environmental factors and exposures times lead to changes in the skin microbiome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>How <em>C. elegans<\/em> (nematode) can be used to study microbiomes<\/strong>.&nbsp; Specifically we are using the model organism, <em>C. elegans<\/em>, to determine how changes to diet and microbial exposure impacts their physiology and life cycle.&nbsp; Ultimately, we&#8217;d like to establish a canine microbiome model with <em>C. elegans<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/facultysites.etown.edu\/wohld\/files\/2024\/12\/nematode.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/figure><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Current Research.&nbsp; My interests are related to microorganisms and their interactions with each other and the surrounding environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;In my lab currently, we are researching: 1.
