England Study Abroad 2024

Our trip includes many literary and cultural highlights:

  • Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-on-Avon and London’s Globe Theatre  (we’ll take in a play)
  • Jane Austen’s home village of Chawton as well as her urban environment in Bath, where we’ll enjoy a Georgian afternoon tea and see the Roman Baths
  • Stonehenge and Salisbury, mythic places that inspired numerous authors

Tentative plans have us staying in Oxford, Bath, Winchester, and London. The tentative dates are May 14-May 28.  That could shift a day either way, but it will definitely be those weeks. 

Some of the listed items may change a bit depending on availability.  You’ll be able to see the final schedule a few months before we travel. 

 

Course Details

Class title: EN102: Western Literary Culture: Regional Writers of England

Dates: tentatively May 14-28 2024 (leaves the week after commencement)

Travel Plans: A 15-day trip that includes visits to some of the most vibrant literary and cultural sites in England: Oxford, Stratford-on-Avon, Bath, Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Winchester, and London. We’ll be exploring the locales that inspired some of the greatest British writers.

Credit Details: The trip counts as

  • 4 college credits
  • a Western Cultural Heritage Core class
  • stacked course option for Honors Program students
  • SLE credit

Course Overview: In EN102 Western Literary Culture we’ll work to put cultural understandings in context by walking where the authors walked and seeing the architecture and landscapes that inspired them. We’ll take food tours and literary tours as we learn more about the lives of famous authors and the culture of England.  See the tentative itinerary. 

 

Participants: The trip is open to students from all E-town departments and programs, including graduate students and graduating seniors.

Visiting students (college students from other colleges who want summer course credit) can speak to Registration and Records and Dr. Moore about the possibility of joining this trip. 

 

Fees:  The listed program cost includes lodging, all in-country travel and entrance fees, 15 meals, and airfare (tentative, based on projections). In addition, 4-credit tuition is half price (approx. $850 in 2024) and will be paid separately.  Payment installments deadlines have been updated with 2024 airfare and vendor prices.

How to Register

I’m so thrilled you are choosing to join us! Here are the next steps:

1. Register your interest by emailing me to get on the email list.

2. Make the “save my spot” registration payment via the payment portal. .

3. Register for the trip with the Study Abroad office’s England trip form (also required).

4. Get/Check your passport. This process can take 10+ weeks once you submit your material, and we need your passport number well before the trip.  If you have a passport, check the expiration date.  The passport must be good for at least six months after the planned date of return.
