Austen FYS 2024

Jane Austen & Regency Romance combines pop culture appeal with a rich literary tradition.  Austen famously elevates manners and social nuance in her novels. FYS students will analyze regency survival techniques while also learning about how to succeed in college. This course will feature all the qualities of an FYS while offering an 100-level introduction to regency literature and culture.

Required Textbooks and Out of Class Experiences

  1. Austen, Jane, Sense and Sensibility, any unabridged/full-length edition will work
  2. APA Course Packet, must be printed by listed date (online, provided)
  3. FYS Readings, selections from first-year texts (online, provided)
  4. Emma (2020 film, on Canvas; DVD on reserve in the library–no need to buy)
  5. Regency Influences Text of Choice (available on Netflix, Prime, or in Canvas—may require rental to view), TBD
  6. All roundtables and 3 OCLEs (Out of Class Learning Experiences), TBD
  7. Register for free student membership of JASNA: https://jasna.org/join/250th-bday-student-offer/

I recommend getting our one required Austen novel from your local library or borrowing it from your favorite Janite. The bookstore won’t have copies on hand because Sense and Sensibility is freely available for cheaper than they could manage. If you own other Austen novels, it wouldn’t hurt to have them on hand, but they are not required.

Some Details about the Course

Jane Austen & Regency Romance is a “devices-down” classroom. That means you will want to bring paper and pens to class for notes. Laptops and phones will stay off desks and in bags during class time. The reason for this? To encourage higher engagement and clearer thinking. ?

Don’t love Austen? Don’t worry! You can focus your intellectual pursuits on topics like regency history or adaptation theory. The class spends a lot of time on getting used to college expectations, too.
